Skiing in the Dolomites: the basics

The Dolomiti Superski area is a network of 12 ski areas with about 1,200 km of pistes and around 450 lifts, all on one pass. Dolomiti is the Italian name of the range, so the Dolomiti ski area and the Dolomites ski area are the same place. Another source gives 1,220 km, so treat the figures as approximate. The operator reports investments of about €100 million for the 2026/27 season.

The areas lie in three regions: South Tyrol, Trentino and the Veneto. Val Gardena and the Alpe di Siusi together offer 175 km of pistes and 79 lifts according to the 2026 holiday guide. Cortina d'Ampezzo is in Belluno, and Canazei is in Trentino. Winter 2026/27 is the first after the Winter Olympics in Cortina in February and March 2026.

The Sella Ronda ski circuit

The Sella Ronda ski area is a loop around the Sella massif over four passes: Pordoi, Sella, Gardena and Campolongo. You ski it on a single Dolomiti Superski pass. The orange route goes clockwise, the green route counterclockwise. The loop passes Arabba, Canazei, Selva, Corvara and Colfosco.

Sources disagree on the length. Dolomiti Superski and the Val Gardena tourist office give 44 km, of which 23 km are pistes. Other local tourism sites give about 40 km, with 26 km of pistes. We say 40 to 44 km, about half on skis and the rest on lifts. The loop crosses three provinces: Bolzano, Trento and Belluno. Check the last lifts in the afternoon, so you do not get stuck on the wrong side.

Sella Ronda ski pass and lift pass

There is no separate Sella Ronda lift pass: you ski the loop on a Dolomiti Superski pass, so the Sella Ronda ski pass prices for 2026/27 are the ones in the table above, up to €89 for one day and €453 for six days in high season.

When does the season start?

Not on one date. It depends on the area and on snow.

Our best summary is: start between late November and early December 2026, depending on the area. A secondary source quotes a price calendar from 20 November 2026 to 21 April 2027. Cortina expects its first openings from the end of November to early December. Lago di Carezza opens on 4 December 2026 and runs until 29 March 2027. The Sella Ronda lifts were still closed on 14 October.

Cortina's main areas run until early or mid April. Cortina also advertises a new 10-seat gondola from Lacedel to Socrepes and the Olympia delle Tofane piste, which can be skied again. The Alpe di Siusi gets a new chairlift, Steger-Dellai, for the 2026/27 season. The restrictions that applied to some lifts during the Olympic Games are over. We have no verified information about winter closures of the passes, so check road conditions before you drive. See our page on the best time to visit for the full lift calendar.

Ski resorts in the Dolomites: areas and villages

The places you will see on the Sella Ronda map.

Val Gardena and Alpe di Siusi

Ortisei, Santa Cristina and Selva share 175 km of pistes and 79 lifts with the Alpe di Siusi. Selva is the entry point to the Sella Ronda in the valley. Check winter operation of the Seceda cable car with the operator.

Alta Badia

Corvara (1,568 m) and Colfosco lie on the Sella Ronda in the Gadertal, a Ladin-speaking valley in South Tyrol. Corvara is a common base for the loop.

Val di Fassa and Arabba

Canazei in Trentino and Arabba in the province of Belluno are the other two stops of the loop. The Pordoi pass joins them.

Cortina d'Ampezzo

The town sits at 1,224 m in the Veneto. The Faloria and Tofana lifts start from the town.

Best ski area in the Dolomites

We cannot rank the areas, because the choice depends on what you want. Val Gardena and the Alpe di Siusi offer 175 km of pistes and 79 lifts, Corvara, Canazei and Selva are bases for the Sella Ronda loop, and Cortina has the Tofana and Faloria lifts.

To get to the slopes without a car, the bus from Venice airport reaches Cortina in about 2 hours 10 minutes, daily all year. From Munich, the EuroCity train to Bolzano takes about 4 hours 25 minutes. We explain both on our page about getting there from Venice.

Where to base yourself

Choose by the loop, the airport and the area you want.

Tourist tax comes on top of the room price. For South Tyrol expect roughly €1.50 to 2.50 per person and night, depending on the municipality. In Trentino, for example in Canazei, the maximum is €3.00 per adult and night. Children under 14 are exempt. You pay in the accommodation.
