Dolomites tours: five types
Tours of the Dolomites fall into five types: day trips from Venice, day trips from Bolzano, guided hikes, photo tours and via ferrata with a mountain guide. This page does not name operators and does not list tour prices. It helps you pick a type and know what to look for in the description. Whether a listing says Dolomites tours or Dolomiti tours, the five types are the same.
The main reason people book a tour is distance. The Cortina Express bus takes about 2 hours 10 minutes from Venice airport to Cortina d'Ampezzo, so a day trip from Venice that follows the same road spends over four hours in the vehicle before any sightseeing. A tour from Bolzano starts closer to the mountains. A second reason is the rules: in summer 2026 Seceda, Tre Cime, Lago di Braies and Alpe di Siusi all needed a ticket, toll or parking booking, and a tour can take over that work.

Dolomites tour types compared
What each type is good for and what to check in the description.
| Type | Best for | Check before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Day trip from Venice | Visitors with a few days in Venice and one free day for the mountains | Meeting point, how many hours are driving (the regular bus alone needs about 2 h 10 min each way), which stops, whether lift tickets or tolls are included |
| Day trip from Bolzano | Visitors staying in or near Bolzano who want one lake or valley without driving | Pick-up point, which valley, whether a lift ticket such as Seceda or Alpe di Siusi is part of the price |
| Guided hike | Walkers who want route-finding, a local guide and a hut stop | Distance and climbing, group size, language, hut season (Tre Cime huts open June to September) |
| Photo tour | Photographers who want the viewpoints at the best light | How the group reaches the viewpoint (the Seceda lifts start at 8:30 am in summer 2026), whether fees are included |
| Via ferrata with a guide | Fit visitors with a head for heights who want a secured route with a guide | Grade, minimum age, whether helmet, harness and via ferrata set are included, weather cancellation |
A simple rule: if you sleep in Venice and have only one day, a tour saves you the logistics, but expect a long day. If you sleep in the mountains, a Dolomites hiking tour or a via ferrata tour with a guide adds the most, because a guide is the part you cannot replace with a timetable.
A day trip to the Dolomites from Venice
A day trip to the Dolomites from Venice is a long day. The Cortina Express alone takes about 2 hours 10 minutes from the airport to Cortina d'Ampezzo, and the two day trips in our picks run 9 and 10 hours. Chairlift tickets are extra on both.

What to check in a tour description
Descriptions differ a lot. These points decide whether the tour is good value.
Lifts, tolls and entry
Seceda costs €74 return in 2026 and the ticket is not refundable. The Tre Cime toll road is €40 per car. Ask whether such costs are in the price, and what happens if the slot cannot be kept.
Time on site
Count the hours you really spend at the destination. For the Tre Cime loop of 9 to 10 km, plan 3 to 4 hours of walking alone.
Group size and language
On a Dolomites group tour, small groups move faster and hear the guide better. Check the language of the guide, especially on hikes.
Pick-up and return
Check where the bus starts and how late it returns. In the 2026/27 timetable the Cortina Express leaves Cortina between 7:00 am and 4:30 pm, so check that the return time fits your plans.
Weather policy
Cloud can hide a viewpoint completely. Look for free cancellation or rebooking, and for what the operator does when conditions in the mountains are unsafe.
Season
Most summer lifts close between late September and early November. A tour that depends on a lift cannot run after that lift closes. Ski areas open between late November and early December. Summer 2027 prices were not published when we checked.
Tour or on your own?
The honest trade-offs.
Pros of a tour
One booking, no timetable, no toll to reserve, and a guide who knows the route. This helps most when you have no car, little time or many rules to follow.
Cons of a tour
The day is fixed, so you cannot wait for clear weather or stay longer at a lake. On the busiest places you also share the viewpoint with many other groups.
Pros of going alone
You choose the day and the pace. Public transport is cheap: the Mobilcard Südtirol costs €22 for one day, €32 for three and €52 for seven days in 2026. The Guest Pass is free at participating accommodation in South Tyrol. See the where to stay guide for bases.
Cons of going alone
You must handle every reservation and ticket yourself. Neither card is valid on the Tre Cime shuttle 444 or, between 1 July and 15 September 2026, on bus 442 to Lago di Braies.
What a Dolomites trip costs on top of the tour
The tour price is only part of the trip cost. If you go alone, a Seceda return ticket costs €74, the Tre Cime toll road €40 per car, and the Mobilcard Südtirol €22 for one day. On a tour, check which of these are already included.

Dolomites tours: frequently asked questions
Can I visit the Dolomites as a day trip from Venice?
Yes, but the day is long. The Cortina Express takes about 2 hours 10 minutes from the airport to Cortina d'Ampezzo, so the return alone is over four hours.
Is the lift ticket included in a tour?
It depends on the tour. Read the description and look for the cable car or toll. A Seceda return ticket costs €74 in 2026 and the Tre Cime toll road €40 per car.
Do I need a guide for a via ferrata?
If you are new to it, a guide is a sensible choice, because they supply the equipment and judge the conditions. Ask about the grade and whether the equipment is included.
Are tours running in late October?
Fewer are. Most summer lifts close between late September and early November. On 19 October 2026 the Seceda and Alpe di Siusi cable cars still run until 2 November.
Is a tour cheaper than going alone?
It depends on the tour. Compare the package price with the cost of your own ticket, toll and transport, then weigh the guide and the saved planning time.
